How does a design school dropout become one of the most acclaimed young designers of today? Alexander Wang is an American designer of Tawainese descent who was raised in California. He was accepted into the prestigious Parsons The New School For Design in New York but dropped out after two years.
In 2007 he started his eponymous, ready-to-wear label and just one year later he won the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award. The award is given to promising young designers to encourage them to expand their growing businesses. At the CFDA awards in 2009 he was named the Swarovski Womenswear Designer of the Year and has since been nominated for and won other fashion awards.
Alexander Wang’s aim is quite simple – to design “clothes that girls want to wear”. His designs exude effortless downtown edge with a touch of West Coast cool. Both his main line and the diffusion line, T By Alexander Wang, maintain a neutral palette of blacks, whites, and greys with the occasional pop of colour.
Wang’s designs are heavily influenced by the nineties and grunge music but are still fresh and modern. The slouchy pieces are perfect for everyday wear and are beloved by models, editors and fashionistas around the world. Alexander Wang’s most iconic item is probably the motorcycle jacket, which he includes almost every season but puts a twist on it so that the classic piece is never boring.
Rihanna has been wearing Alexander Wang since 2009. Even though she has expanded her closet to include a myriad of designers, Alexander Wang is definitely a permanent fixture in her wardrobe. Other celebrities who adore the 28-year-old designer include First Lady Michelle Obama, Hollywood darling Elle Fanning, Rooney Mara, Kanye West and Rih’s co-star Alexander Skarsgard.
