At the end of March Rihanna was spotted in New York wearing a pair of metallic shield sunglasses by Dior that didn’t match any style in the brand’s archives. Luckily, I was able to confirm that the sunglasses are from Rihanna’s collaboration with the brand. Early last year she was named the first black ambassador for Dior and she makes history once again with this collection. No other celebrity or face of the brand has been allowed to design for the iconic fashion house. Today Women’s Wear Daily released photos and information about the sunglasses collection.

Rihanna x Dior shield sunglasses campaign The sunglasses collection consists of one shield style in six colours and they will be exclusively available from Dior boutiques at the beginning of June. According to WWD, Rihanna is a Star Trek fan who was inspired by the futuristic eyewear worn by La Forge on Star Trek: The Next Generation as well as one of the brand’s previous styles from 2000.

Above are the six colours. The 24k gold version will set you back $1,950 but the other five colours will retail for $840. Rihanna was heavily involved in the design process, which is how she approaches all of her collaborations. Here’s how she tackled the task:

The process was pretty seamless. I spent a day at Dior with their eyewear design team. I started by looking through all the archives to see what they’ve done in the past, then got acquainted with all the new materials. I literally sat there and drew and drew until I was happy with the design, and the team illustrated it for me right then and there. We picked materials and colors that same day, and after that it was a matter of weeks before I saw the first prototype.

Mathieu Jamin, Dior’s eyewear designer, was particularly impressed by Rihanna. This is what he had to say.

She chose all the materials. We had a lot of different samples with different effect of metals. She chose all the lenses and took time to match all the colors together to see if it was right on her face. It was really important to her.

Apparently there will be no official campaign images but Dior teamed up with photographer Jean-Baptiste Mondino for a few shots of Rihanna in the sunglasses. These will be used for in-house purposes. Check out the rest of the photos below.
