After seeing Rihanna’s Spring/Summer 2017 collection for Fenty x Puma it’s easy to understand why she showed during Paris Fashion Week. Rihanna spent a year working on the collection that she describes as Marie Antoinette going to the gym. Held at the Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild (a stunning building built in 1878 in Paris’ eighth arrondissement), models decked out in the new collection strolled from one chandelier-strewn room to the next room.
The singer proclaims that this collection is more reflective of her own personal style and I have to agree. Over the past year Rihanna has made corsets seem like a normal part of any outfit. She pioneered the underwear as outerwear trend two years ago. She’s made loose-fitting menswear a perfectly acceptable stage outfit for female pop stars. When Vetements made elongated sleeves the hottest thing, Rihanna jumped right on board and made that clothing line her own. She basically has all the current “It” girls following her lead. You can see a lot of Rihanna’s influences in the new collection. Just take a look at all the lace, sheer slip dresses and corsetry.
Fenty x Puma’s Spring 2017 colour palette and vibe is quite a departure from the Fall 2016 collection. It’s a lot less athletic and more high fashion and that’s something not usually associated with a brand like Puma. Pretty pastels replaced the black while floral prints and eyelet took over from the graphic prints. Crystals and pearls took the place of chains and knit chokers. The Puma logo isn’t as pervasive either.
Though there were a few holdovers from the previous collection such as the lacing detail and pointed-toe shoes (Rihanna’s favourite style). And the platform sneakers that made Fenty x Puma a must-have brand are there too. As a whole the collection feels more luxurious and one can appreciate the effort put in by the design team. I expect the bags from this collection – bow-shaped fanny packs and lace-trimmed drawstring gym bags – will be popular.
Here are all the looks from the new collection.
