My friend who runs La Maison Gaga requested details on Rihanna’s fashion in the music video for Hard. Released in December 2009, the video features the dark and edgy aesthetic that we all associate with the Rated R era. Back then Rih worked with Mariel Haenn of R & M Styling. Haenn really helped to elevate her style. Unfortunately, this recap doesn’t cover everything she wore in the video but I hope you like it anyway.
Next Rihanna kept her troops in line while wearing a jacket from Alexandre Vauthier‘s Fall 2009 couture collection.
Luckily, Rihanna’s team did release a few stills including the above photo. One of the most memorable looks from the video is the black mini dress with spiky shoulders. It’s from Bryce d’Anice Aime‘s Spring/Summer 2010 collection.
In this scene Rihanna wore a custom shirt adorned with safety pins. It was made by Pelayo Diaz. He is the blogger behind Kate Loves Me and he attended Central Saint Martins. His safety pin cross t-shirts caught the eye of Rih’s style team and that’s how she got this top.
It’s from Jeremy Scott‘s Spring/Summer 2007 collection, which had some military influences. A costume design company called Muto-Little made the bullet bra.
This is the last look. I don’t actually know who designed this helmet but the inspiration for it comes from French cuirassier helmets. These are the kind of helmets the cavalry wore back in the 1800s. Madonna’s backup dancers wore similar ones for her 2012 Super Bowl halfime performance.
