Just last year Rihanna was honoured with the first ever Icon Award at the American Music Awards and tomorrow night she will accept the Council of Fashion Designers of America award for Fashion Icon of the Year. It’s an accolade that isn’t given out too often. The last recipient was Lady Gaga in 2011 and other awardees include fashion legends Iman and Kate Moss. This young woman from the tiny island of Barbados has cemented her status in two industries – music and fashion – and her journey is far from over.
In celebration of this momentous achievement her stylist Mel Ottenberg and a slew of incredible designers have been sharing their thoughts on Rihanna, the fashion icon. Mel was profiled by the New York Times and spoke about working with the singer on tour, the more relaxed aesthetic that the two seem to prefer and his time on Styled To Rock US among other things. Over at Style.com, established designers such as Alexander Wang, Zac Posen, Jeremy Scott and Stella McCartnney discuss Rihanna’s influence on the fashion industry and her undeniable style. Up-and-comers like Hyein Seo and Simone Rocha, who have experienced a major boost in their businesses since the star wore their designs, also share their thoughts on her impact.
As we all wait with increasing anticipation to see Rihanna receive her award tomorrow from Anna Wintour, Vogue’s editor-in-chief, let’s take a trip down memory lane with nine of her best red carpet looks. What are your favourite Rihanna outfits of all time? Let me know in the comments below!
