Rihanna is a fashion icon and that’s a fact that cannot be disputed. With that status comes a lot of attention so it’s a big deal for any young designer to see Rihanna in their clothes. Suddenly the whole world has their eyes on them and the interview requests roll in. Rihanna’s support of these designers is one reason why Parsons School of Design will honor her this month. On May 22, she will receive an award at the annual Parsons Benefit. In a statement to The Cut, the school’s executive dean Joel towers had this to say:
Parsons is proud to present Rihanna with this honor, as she has inspired millions through her powerful music and distinct style. She has championed our recent alumni on a number of occasions by wearing their designs. She is also creating important philanthropic programs, which support communities by fostering effective education, health, and emergency response programs around the world through her Clara Lionel Foundation.
But it doesn’t end there. According to WWD, Rihanna, Parsons, Donna Karan’s Urban Zen Foundation and Haitian artists have teamed up for a charitable collaboration. A few students from the renowned fashion school will work with those Haitian artists this summer in the island’s capital. The merchandise they create will benefit the Clara Lionel Foundation. The CLF provides important health and education services in developing countries.
