Just two years ago Rihanna graced W Magazine’s September issue. Well, she’s on the cover of the magazine’s most important issue of the year again. Edward Enninful, W’s fashion director, teamed up with renowned photographer Steven Klein and Se7en screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker for the shoot.
The post-apocalyptic editorial stars Rihanna as a queen named “Tomorrow”. According to Enninful, a queen deserves nothing but the best custom pieces. Designers such as John Galliano and Miuccia Prada took on the task of creating these custom looks. Yusef Williams worked on hair while the incredible Pat McGrath worked on makeup. Here’s how it all turned out.
On the cover and in this photo Rihanna wears jewellery by Cartier. This includes a diamond tiara originally created for the Countess of Essex in 1902, a choker from 1906 made of rose cut diamonds, and a pair of chandelier earrings. The moonstone ear band is by Jacquie Aiche (pictured above in size XL). Click here to shop other ear bands.
In this photo Rihanna wears a headpiece and a custom gold foil opera coat by Gareth Pugh. The coat, inspired by the Spring 2007 collection, is made of emergency blankets. The bra, briefs and harness (£245) are all by Bordelle. Manolo Blahnik custom-made the leather chap boots. The boots are similar to the ones she designed for the Denim Desserts collection. Her jewellery includes claw rings by Lynn Ban (worn throughout) and an arm bracelet from Mugler‘s archive.
Next we have the Barbadian superstar in a custom Maison Margiela by John Galliano cape. Around her neck is Rachel Freire‘s She-Ra collar from the Lost collection and underneath the cape is Fannie Schiavoni‘s PVC bustier (£465). The rest of her ensemble includes a belt, key chain, agenda and boots by Prada, Jennifer Fisher‘s Samira hoop earrings with custom charms, Fallon rings and a diamond and gold bra by Jacquie Aiche.
Here Rihanna rocks a custom Loewe dress with the brand’s Fall 2016 leather corset and gold bracelets. The mesh bag is Christopher Kane Fall 2016. Her earrings are the same Jennifer Fisher ones mentioned above but she also wears one of the designer’s chokers. The rest of her jewellery includes Jovana Djuric earrings and a Nina Runsdorf bracelet.
Check out Rihanna in a custom Prada jacket with a fur hood as well as a red version of the brand’s Fall 2016 lace-up corset. The belt, key chains, keys, charms, agenda, tights, backpack, bag, furs, and boots are also Prada. You’ll recognise the Cartier choker from the cover.
Now we have Rihanna in her own designs. She’s wearing a Fenty x Puma Fall 2016 jacket with drawstring hood, a corset bearing a Gothic number thirteen and Puma-branded pants. The boots are Maison Margiela.
In this photo the Barbadian singer wears a Hood by Air Atelier dress with a E.L.F Zhou London bodysuit and vintage leather boots from David Samuel Menkes Custom Leatherwear. Her jewellery includes a Jennifer Fisher body chain and a set of Chris Habana‘s La Bruja rings ($160).
The Dior brand ambassador wears a custom peacoat with ruched sleeves and the Rihanna shield sunglasses she designed. She also sports a Marina Hoermanseder Fall 2015 body piece, the Prada belt, backpack, key chains, etc mentioned earlier and Vetements Fall 2016 thigh high boots.
Finally we have Rihanna in a Proenza Schouler dress with lace-up detail. It’s inspired by their Fall 2016 collection. Manuel Albarran created the metal face place, bra and leg piece. Visit his website to learn more about his work.
Below is a behind-the-scenes look at the September issue and there are a few glimpses of Rihanna.
