Last Thursday Rihanna returned to her native Barbados where the island is currently celebrating the end of another great Crop Over Festival. Rih turned up just in time to enjoy the last lap of the Crop Over 2015 events including the main event, Kadooment Day. Crop Over is held annually to celebrate the end of the sugar cane harvest. In the past the production of sugar was the island’s main industry and it still represents a big part of Barbadian culture. Kadooment Day is the ultimate event and involves groups of costumed bands “jumping” down the road from the national stadium to Spring Garden Highway. Let’s take a closer look at Rihanna’s costume.
This year marked the Bajan star’s third time jumping in a costume band since becoming famous ten years ago. Two years ago she played mas’ with Zulu International and she must have really enjoyed herself because she went with that band again. This year Zulu’s designer Lauren Austin was inspired by “The Hunger Games” books and movies and the entertainer wore a customised version of the Mockingjay costume featured below.
The Mockingjay design was, of course, based on the bird that becomes the symbol of the revolution in Panem. Rihanna’s version comprises a bejewelled bikini, large black wings tipped with green and brown feathers and green iridescent crystals, a matching feathered headpiece adorned with gold chains and custom boots. It also came with crystal-embellished cuff bracelets, a necklace and shin coverings. She also sported several body chains by Jacquie Aiche including a custom dragon body chain, one featuring five diamonds set in a thick chain ($3,875) and one bearing two large gemstones.
A few days earlier the singer skipped the traditional Foreday Morning Jam that she attended in 2013 and instead partied with Caesar’s Army. The J’ouvert event called A.M.Bush was held in Vaucluse, St. Thomas from 2am until 8am on Saturday. There she wore one of the group’s tank tops bearing the Caesar’s Army eagle logo and some cut off shorts with custom Puma creepers created by Mr Completely. While most people choose not to wear jewellery to a paint-filled event like this one, Rih continued to sport her usual layers of gold necklaces.
Among her necklaces you can spot Jennifer Fisher‘s ribbon choker, which is designed to look like a ribbon that’s been knotted in several places. It is covered in 14k yellow gold. She also rocked MALA by Patty Rodriguez‘s “Ride or Die” nameplate necklace. Shop these pieces below.
