Designer Profile: Giorgio Armani
“Elegance is not about being noticed, it’s about being remembered”. Those are the famous words of Giorgio Armani and words that all fashionistas should live by.
Giorgio Armani was born in Italy in 1934. His childhood dream was to be a doctor but after an enlightening stint in the military fate would lead him into a career designing menswear.
In 1975, he launched his eponymous label and released both menswear and womenswear collections. Over the years he expanded his brand to include A/X: Armani Exchange, Emporio Armani and the couture line, Armani Privé.
Most would have retired at his age but at 78 years old Mr. Armani is still designing and finding innovative ways to promote his brands. For example, in 2007 he was the first designer to live stream a couture collection. The Armani brand as a whole is worth several billions and he is the most successful Italian designer of all time.
Armani is known for his stellar menswear designs but he is still a popular choice for the red carpet especially at the Academy Awards and Golden Globes. Even though he has been in the industry longer than most he still attracts young starlets such as Blake Lively, Megan Fox, Lady Gaga and Anne Hathaway, a true testament to his talent.
Rihanna has been wearing Armani for several years. As her star began to rise in 2007 she chose Armani Privé for red carpet appearances. In 2012 Rihanna was announced as the new face of Armani Underwear and Armani Jeans and also went on to design two capsule collections for the brands. She collaborated with the iconic designer for two Scarface-inspired designs that she wore to the Grammys and London Fashion Week.
