Since it’s rumoured that Rihanna will perform at the Brit Awards tonight, I thought I would present a brief retrospective of her outfits from the event. The Bajan singer hasn’t made an appearance at the televised awards show since 2012 so it would be a treat to have her on that red carpet again this year. Let’s take a trip down memory lane with her past outfits.
Rihanna first attended the Brit Awards in 2008 where she sported an adorable jet black pixie cut, heavily lined eyes and gold jewellery that contrasted nicely with her silver dress. The strapless mini dress was designed by Dolce & Gabbana and had an adorable bow at the waist. While this exact dress never went down the runway, their Fall 2007 collection heavily featured high shine metallics. Check it out here. Silver strappy pumps by Christian Louboutin complemented the look.
The star then took to the stage with the British band Klaxon to perform a mash-up of her hit song Umbrella and their single Golden Skans (watch it here). She wore a flowing long-sleeved dress with the matching scarf draped across her shoulders from Mara Hoffman‘s Fall/Winter 2008 collection. The olive green pieces were covered in one of Hoffman’s signature patterns. This one utilised black, pink and gold.
The next time we saw Rihanna at the Brits was February 2011. The talented beauty was sporting the fiery red hair that was the symbol of the Loud album era. This time around she was styled by Avigail Claire of Silver Spoon Studio. Rih wore Look 25 from Christian Dior‘s Fall 2010 couture collection, which was designed by John Galliano. The dress consisted of a purple floral-print bustier and a bright blue skirt covered in frilly tiers with a contrasting green bow at the waist. The Christian Louboutin pointed-toe pumps were the perfect shade of blue to match the dress.
Rihanna also performed in 2011. That night she sang a medley of hits that included Only Girl (in the World), S&M and What’s My Name. At the beginning of the performance she strutted around the stage in a custom dress by Giles Deacon. The sleeveless red dress was adorned with large rosettes around the neckline and it also featured a train. The designer said that he was approached about creating the piece a few weeks ahead of the show and the fitting was held just two days before Rihanna was scheduled to hit the stage. She would later remove the dress to reveal a bodysuit. Click here to watch the performance.
In 2011 Rih won the award for Best International Female Solo Artist and she accepted her award and also posed in the press room in a dress from Oscar de la Renta‘s Spring/Summer 2011 ready-to-wear collection [Look 46]. Her sole piece of jewellery was Solange Azagury-Partridge‘s Union Jack enamel ring which, as the name suggests, bears the likeness of the British flag. Rihanna has worn the ring a few times including an episode of Styled To Rock.
I originally posted about this look in 2012 but there was a woeful lack of information so let’s revisit it here. At the 2012 Brit Awards Rihanna was styled by Mel Ottenberg (click here to read my interview with the top stylist). On the red carpet she wore a stunning beaded gown and brown opera-length gloves from Givenchy‘s Spring 2012 couture collection [Look 7]. The halter dress was covered in crystals and featured a deep v neckline, thigh high splits in the front and back as well as a draped open back (click here to view the back of the dress). She also wore the brand’s diamante peep-toe sandals. Her jewellery that evening comprised stud earrings by Solange Azagury-Partridge and three delicate body chains by Jacquie Aiche.
That year Rihanna performed We Found Love, her most successful single to date, and once again took home the award for Best International Female Solo Artist. The songstress accepted her award in her performance outfit. The ripped, long-sleeved top and cut off shorts were custom-designed by Adam Selman (read my interview with him here). The outfit was accessorised with Timberland‘s 6″ premium boots in wheat-coloured nubuck suede ($180), Cutler and Gross for Giles Spring 2010 Scooby sunglasses and Maria Francesca Pepe‘s rose gold Rihanna necklace. Rih is a big fan of Maria’s jewellery and was first seen in the necklace back in 2010 so the designer named it after her. Check out these accessories below.
