Shine bright like a diamond. Or more than 230,000 Swarovski crystals because that’s the number it took to create Rihanna’s CFDA Awards outfit. The entire ensemble – slinky, racerback dress, opera-length gloves, scarf – was created by Adam Selman, who was previously profiled on the blog, is the head of Rihanna’s design team and more importantly, is emerging as an incredible designer. So it was only fitting that she should wear one of his creations on one of the biggest nights of her career. Rihanna is the 2014 CFDA Fashion Icon of the Year and she definitely looked the part.
Who is more daring, more adventurous, provocative and carefree right now when it comes to fashion? You will be hardpressed to find another with her chameleon-like abilities, unrelenting confidence and inimitable style. As she said in her acceptance speech, “fashion should never be frustrating, it should be fun.” When Rihanna steps out the door you can tell that she is having the time of her life and last night she was utterly brazen in her twist on old Hollywood glamour.
The outfit was reminiscent of Josephine Baker and 1920s style but felt modern and fresh thanks to the completely sheer fishnet material, those sparkling iridescent crystals (which were painstakingly applied by Adam’s team) and the effortless way that Rihanna pulled it off. Over at Style.com, Adam and Mel Ottenberg revealed that the dress was conceived shortly after the MTV Movie Awards and the aim was to design a dress “that you couldn’t find anywhere else in the world”. Mission accomplished!
Mel styled the look with a Pologeorgis pink fur stole and Manolo Blahnik metallic gold Chaos ankle-strap sandals. Rihanna’s jewelry included a cocktail ring with pavé white diamonds by Jacob & Co and moonstone and white diamond dangle earrings and a ring by Paul Morelli. Her smokey eye was the work of Mylah Morales and Yusef Williams created her ‘do.
Congratulations Rihanna! This is well-deserved.
