Rihanna’s Diamonds World Tour kicked off in Buffalo, New York on March 8th, 2013. Nothing was going to stop that concert, not even the flu. The singer graced the stage despite her illness and put on a good show. The stage is exciting and the costumes definitely reflect the shift in Rihanna’s style over the last two years. You can feel the influence of her love for streetwear but there are also a few glam moments. Her stylist Mel Ottenberg was responsible for pulling together these looks. Check them out below:
Rihanna first appears on stage in head-to-toe Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci. This entire outfit was specially made for Rihanna and includes a long black cloak, which is removed to reveal an embroidered hooded parka and a sheer shirt with solid black sleeves that is reminiscent of the SS2009 collection. Underneath Rihanna wears a black and white leather bra that features gold stars (one of the brand’s signatures) as well as printed silk satin shorts. Her lace-up, over-the-knee nappa leather boots were also designed by Tisci.Above are some sketches released by the house of Givenchy. Here’s what Tisci had to say about Rihanna: “I enjoyed making these looks. Rihanna represents what young and amazing means today. She is punk and talented. She offers intelligence, energy and pure beauty.”
Next Rihanna comes on stage clad in a racer-inspired look designed by Adam Selman. The very first time Rihanna worked with Adam was for the Loud tour and he’s happily working with her again. The multi-coloured outfit includes a bustier with leather detail and pants that feature both mesh and quilted panels. Her white snakeskin boots were custom-made by Manolo Blahnik.
The next costume change involves a sheer dress designed by Raf Simons. The dress was inspired by Ed Ruscha’s ‘Sea of Desire’ paintings. Simons also used the paintings as inspiration for the Raf Simons 1995 Fall/Winter 2012 collection. Underneath Rihanna wears an Eres bra and Wolford shorts. If her boots look familiar that’s because they are the custom, white version of her favourite Christian Louboutin Sea.nn girl thigh-high boots. Her gold necklace was custom-made by Michael Schmidt, who previously worked with the singer on the Princess of China video and Hackney Festival 2012.
During the next segment of the show Rihanna hits the stage in another custom look created by Adam Selman. Rihanna rocks a sleeveless cropped top with a skirt that features Adam’s signature knot detail and a high slit. Her ankle-strap pumps are Manolo Blahnik. Everyone knows how much Rihanna loves to sport a red lip and this shade of red goes perfectly with her favourite lipstick.
The singer then re-emerges on stage wearing yet another Adam Selman design and this one is really interesting. Adam has used digital prints for Rihanna before but this time he combined a digital print of a US one dollar bill with iridescent fabric for a bespoke army jacket, baby doll dress and shorts. The money-print fabric creates a holographic effect that really pops under the stage lights. Of course, holographic sneakers are the perfect match for such a look. These ones were designed by Pierre Hardy.
For her final songs of the night, the pop star graces the stage in a silver bodysuit with a deep v-neck and beaded pants. These were custom designed by Alber Elbaz of Lanvin. This type of beading was used in Lanvin’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection, like the jumpsuit Rihanna wore on The Voice last year. Her pumps are Manolo Blahnik.
