Footwear News announced today that the Fenty x Puma Creeper designed by Rihanna is their 2016 Shoe of the Year. Past winners include Kanye West for his Yeezy Boost 350 sneaker and Stan Smith for his adidas collaboration. Footwear News chooses the shoe of the year winner based on retail sales, general buzz and how the consumers respond to the product. And Rihanna pretty much nailed all of that and more with the Creeper.
Each new Creeper colourway released in the last year sold out in minutes forcing fans to wait painstakingly for the next restock. The Hadid sisters, Future, Lena Dunham and Jessica Alba are just a few of the celebs who are fans of the platform sneaker. That coupled with Rihanna’s own fashion icon status made it the must-have shoe of 2016. It’s kind of amazing that a re-imagining of Puma’s Classic Suede sneaker could propel the brand to new heights but here we are. This is what the superstar had to say about the honour:
“In my wildest dreams, I never would have imagined an honor like Shoe of the Year. It means so much to me to make a mark like this in the shoe and sneaker industry and to have so many people share my love for the Creeper.”
Hopefully, Rihanna will attend the Footwear News Achievement Awards ceremony on November 29th even though she’s scheduled to perform in Barbados the next day. This is a great achievement that validates her effort as a designer.
